You’ve reached a point in your life where your priorities have taken a major shift. For years, you’ve craved more free time–and now it’s finally here. As tempting as it may be, now isn’t the time to slow down and take a break; now is the time to shift gears into adventure.

With motivation and routine, it’s possible to be fitter now than you were thirty years ago. Research shows that over 60s who exercise regularly can reduce their risk of chronic diseases, improve their emotional well-being, their sleep, and even boost their cognitive function.

It all sounds easy enough, but we know that half the problem can be finding a place to start. Luckily, the Okanagan Valley boasts some of the finest, easy-access adventurous activities in British Columbia’s interior. We’ve rounded up some of the best activities for over 60s to try.

E-Biking

E-Bikes (electric bicycles with built-in pedal power assistance) are perfect for those looking for an epic adventure outdoors that isn’t too physically taxing. In Kelowna, there are options to ride up the city’s legendary Knox Mountain, or simply take a leisurely cruise around the city. You can view many of the available E-bike routes in Kelowna here.

Hiking & Sightseeing

Immersing yourself in the great outdoors has boundless benefits for the mind, body, and spirit. The Okanagan Valley is characterized by a string of lakes created by glaciation and there is certainly no shortage of stunning and easy-access hiking routes to explore. Go hiking on the trail network that surrounds Okanagan Lake and you are almost certain to be rewarded with great views. Whether you’re after a short jaunt or a more challenging day hike, find all the trails and information through Tourism Kelowna.

Yoga & Swimming

Yoga and aqua classes are both low-intensity activities that have a multitude of benefits for mental and physical wellbeing. You may already know that swimming can improve your heart health, improve your flexibility and strengthen a whole range of muscles; but what you may not know is that water exercises can enhance mood and mental acuity. At Ariva, we offer morning yoga classes as well as stretch and aqua classes to our residents.

Regular valley and city dining excursions will be facilitated by the chauffeured service of a 16-passenger Mercedes Sprinter Van. All you have to do is bring yourself along.

Participating In Outdoor Games

Kelowna receives over 2,000 of sun every year, which in part contributes to its reputation as one of the best places for golfing in Canada. Long, dry summers mean the courses stay in prime condition for longer. Your list of golf courses is also a long one; choose to play at one of over 20 courses in and around Kelowna.

If golfing isn’t your thing, don’t let that stop you from getting out and participating in sport. At Ariva, you can join in at one of the exclusive pickleball leagues within the residential community. Badminton, mini-golf and shuffleboard are all great options too.

[ Also read: Lakeside Living In The Summertime ]

Paddling

Paddling is a great way to keep active without even feeling like you’re doing any work. As a starting point, dip your paddle in the friendly waters of Okanagan Lake. With mild temperatures in July, Kelowna’s largest lake is a great place to launch your canoe, kayak, paddleboard or floaty. Spanning 135km, Okanagan Lake may be the biggest, but there are plenty of other waterways to explore just outside of Kelowna. If you’re looking to keep your adventures close-to-home, you can find more information on paddling part of (or all of) the 27-kilometer trail Kelowna Paddle Trail here.

There’s so much to love about fall; the crisp, cool air, cozy autumn days, and the changing colours of the trees. The Okanagan is well known for its long, hot summers, we’ve even written about some of the wonderful ways to make the most of the warmer middle months, but it’s time to talk about Fall. The slower pace, wide-open spaces, and fewer crowds make this the perfect time of year to get out and explore our backyard.

Vineyards in the evening sun

Enjoy the Harvest

It’s hard to miss the abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables when you’re in the Okanagan. Fruit trees adorn the hillsides and there’s a fruit stand around almost every turn. In fall things really come into their own. Take the opportunity to visit some of the local orchards to pick up some seasonal gems for yourself.

If you’re spending time with family, especially kiddos, we recommend a trip to Davison Orchards. The ridiculously quaint family-run orchards are packed full of fun for all ages. Indulge in some tasty homemade treats, feed the animals, don’t forget to tour the pumpkin patch, and most definitely take home some goodies.

With acres upon acres of vineyards and orchards peppered throughout the Okanagan, there’s plenty to choose from. Right on our doorstep is the Westside Wine Trail. Boasting 14 wineries, this gem of a collection is not to be missed. The best way to experience the vineyards of the Okanagan is with a guided wine tour. Ariva is delighted to be offering this service to their residents and we hope you’ll join us!

Okanagan Lake with autumnal trees

Embrace the Changes

At this time of year, the highlands above Kelowna glow with the glorious golds of the Larch trees. Head to Myra Canyon to hike or cycle a scenic portion of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, and don’t forget to take your camera! The trail is relatively flat, so it’s a nice easy hike or bike if you’re in need of a more mellow day out.

Head to Okanagan Lake and hunt for Hidden Beach. In the spring and summer, the beach is inaccessible with the high water. Fall brings out hidden spots like this one. You’ll feel a lot like you’re at the beach on the west coast.

Changing colours of the grape vines in fall

Feeling Festive

The Kelowna festival scene comes to life in fall, giving you plenty of good excuses to get out and have some fun. The Hopscotch festival takes place in September, celebrating all things whiskey, beer and spirits. Next up is the Okanagan Wine Festival. This bi-annual festival is not to be missed, offering both locals and visitors numerous wine-themed events.

Active woman taking a break to enjoy the views

Staying Active

It’s an ideal time for outdoor pursuits with the cooler temperatures and the bright, clear skies. Take to the still warm lakes for a paddle and enjoy the vibrant changing colours from the water or head to the hills with the hikers, mountain bikers and horseback riders.

The milder weather offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy our many and varied golf courses. Treat yourself to a locally sourced dinner and perhaps a craft beer at one of the exceptional breweries nearby.

The Annual Okanagan Marathon and Family Festival Weekend take place in October and whether you’re a participant or a spectator it’s a great atmosphere and something fun and different to experience with friends or family.

Relax & Recharge

The summer months can be full-on, it’s important to take time to recuperate in the fall and prepare for the winter season ahead. The slower pace can give us an opportunity to really take it all in and appreciate our surroundings.

We hope you’re as excited as we are to spend the fall season in the Okanagan. We’d love to hear about how you like to spend your time so join us on our social channels and let us know in the comments.

Summers in the Okanagan are long and bountiful with clear skies and crystal waters. We are blessed with the ability to spend so much time outdoors and much of that is in, on or around the lakes. Thankfully we have plenty of them to choose from. These are some of our personal favourites and recommendations for time well spent.

Whether it’s a swim, beachside lounge, canoe, kayak, paddle board or boating, our pristine waters are welcoming and great for working up an appetite as well as relaxation and quality time.

Views over Okanagan Lake looking towards Kelowna

Okanagan Lake

Okanagan Lake temperatures average 19°C-23°C in July, making it the perfect place to cool off in the hot summer sun. From Vernon in the North to Penticton in the South, our stunning lake spans a vast 135km with Kelowna nestled in the middle. There are countless beautiful beaches along the Kelowna shoreline equipt with picnic tables and Adirondack chairs for lounging.

Kelowna Paddle Trail

The Kelowna Paddle Trail is a great way to explore the array of beaches and stretches from McKinley Beach to Bertram Creek Regional Park. Guided by buoys near the shore, you’ll paddle by three waterfront resorts, two bird sanctuaries, over 20 beaches and parks, and the sights of bustling downtown Kelowna. An impressive 27km of paddle trail can be undertaken from start to finish but if you can enjoy as much or as little as you like.

Kalamalka Lake

Okanagan Lake’s smaller but no less beautiful companion is Kalamalka Lake, or “Kal Lake” as it’s known to the locals. Under an hour’s drive North from Kelowna, this world-renown lake reaches balmy temperatures of 22°C – 27°C in the summer months. Also known as ‘lake of a thousand colours‘, Kalamalka displays different hues depending on the time of year, so you’re in for a treat whenever you choose to visit.

Treasures of Kalamalka

Perfect for a picnic and paddle, the beaches of Jade Bay & Juniper Bay in Kalamalka Provincial Park are a must-see. Surrounded by Ponderosa Pines, there’s plenty of shady spots to escape the direct sun. Kaloya Regional Park in the village of Oyama is another lakeside gem. With pretty flower gardens and well maintained amenities this beach is picture perfect, often a favourite venue for weddings.

Bikes on the Okanagan Rail Trail looking over Kalamalka Lake

The Rail Trail

The wonderful Okanagan Rail Trail spans the length of Kalamalka Lake and gives easy access to Kelkuli Bay Provincial Park along the way.

My best friend is a self-confessed hoarder. Visiting her is a lot like watching a version of ‘This is your life.’ Everything she has acquired over the years is still lurking around, gathering dust. That dust has to be dealt with, and so, instead of going to the local cafe to catch up and enjoy each other’s company, here we are, in her house, dusting.

The moral of this story is simple. The fewer things you possess, the more free time you have to spend with friends like me, in such desperate need of socialization (thanks Covid) they are willing to help you dust.

Looking at old memories and decluttering a house.

Oh The Memories…

When questioned why she didn’t just get rid of things, my friend regaled me with stories and anecdotes for each box or object as if they were the people and memories themselves. I remembered some advice I’d read in ‘The Best of Everything After 50‘ by Barbara Hannah Grufferman. By the time we reach 50, we need to step back and evaluate everything we’ve accumulated. Shifting our focus to where we are in the present and where we want to be in the future helps us stay grounded and ultimately happier.

Fragile – boxes of memories stacked for moving house

Re-evaluate

Retirement and age bombard us with change after change, which can leave us clinging to the past like a life raft. Memories and keepsakes are wonderful, don’t get me wrong, but when your precious time is taken up by cleaning and maintaining a sprawling collection, it’s time to re-evaluate.

Clutter is a dirty word

Distinguishing the clutter from the keepsakes is a good first step. Clutter makes us feel bogged-down and trapped in the mire. Donate, sell or gift items that you don’t need or have a real emotional attachment to. You’ll feel lighter already, I promise. Don’t go spending that extra money on more ‘stuff’ though! Add it to your retirement fun fund and enjoy experiences instead.

If you’re intrigued by the idea of more free time, then let the experts help you:

Marie Kondo has made a name for herself with practical advice on organizing your home – and other aspects of your life.

Julie Morgenstern is a pro on tackling clutter and creating a system that makes sense

Congratulations

Decluttering takes time. It’s important to be kind to yourself during the process. Be aware that it might be highly emotional sorting through and saying goodbye to your possessions. Acknowledge those feelings and focus on how far you’ve come. Make sure to congratulate yourself on your progress and don’t lose heart.

Smiling and happy after downsizing to condo living

Downsizing

I’d always considered myself a minimalist until it came to moving house. Downsizing into a condo was the right move for me. It’s something I recommend to most of my friends looking to shake things up and live a little bit more. What I didn’t expect was to be confronted with decades worth of, well, stuff that I’d forgotten I owned and put in storage to be dealt with ‘another day.’ That day finally came, and I’m thankful that I’d planned ahead enough to be in good health, and able to take care of the organization. My advice to you:

Declutter and downsize whilst you’re young and healthy

Focus on the now, and the next steps – not the past

Embrace your extra time with new friends and hobbies

Ask for help if you need it, there’s no shame in reaching out

Something I’ve found in my downsized life is that I really cherish the things I do own. I’m also less likely to spend frivolously on unplanned purchases as I enjoy my new, cleaner space. It brings me peace.

Free your time and shed that clutter!

Reaching the half-century mark is the perfect time to reflect and take stock of your goals for later life. Try these 20 things to renew your energy and set yourself up for success in retirement. It’s well worth putting in a bit of planning to make sure exciting times lie ahead as you reach uncharted territory.

Volunteer in your community
Find purpose by helping your community. You’ll meet new people, make a difference and feel a natural sense of accomplishment.

Become a mentor
Sharing your hard-earned knowledge with the next generations is a fulfilling experience. Plus, being recognised as a professional in your field does wonders for your sense of identity when you reach retirement.

Learn a new skill
Try your hand at something you’ve always wanted to do, it could lead to a new lease of life.

A couple watching videos for tips on staying up to date with advancing
technology trends.

Refresh your IT skills
The world of technology moves fast and it’s hard to keep up. Get ahead and don’t get left behind. Take a course or there’s no shame in asking your tech-savvy friends and family for advice.

Track down lost pensions
Use a service to find old pensions and consolidate them.

Get a health check on your financial planning
Make sure you’re on track to hit your financial goals in this next phase of your life with a registered financial planner.

Downsize
Switching to condo living or a smaller property will boost your retirement income.

Eat a blue-zone diet
The world’s longest-lived people share a diet in common and it’s no secret. Focus on those fresh fruits and vegetables to reap the rewards in old age. Thankfully in the Okanagan, we’re blessed with a bountiful array of locally grown produce, ripe for the picking.

Two friends taking part in a pilates class to improve strength and muscle quality.

Start strength training
Stay on top of that muscle depletion with twice-weekly strength training to fend off osteoporosis.

Get more vitamin D
For over 50s, it’s especially important for preventing osteoporosis. In the winter months, it helps to keep those levels high. Take supplements or Increase your exposure to vitamin D all year round by living somewhere with high sunshine hours. We personally love the Okanagan.

Quit smoking
The health benefits are many and if you quit at 50 you’ll add years to your life.

Get a hearing test
Didn’t catch the punch line of your friend’s joke? Our hearing degrades naturally as we age and it’s very gradual. Make sure it’s not worse than you think by getting regular check-ups.

Go see an optician
Eye health is so important. Stay on top of it with regular checks to make sure age-related issues like glaucoma aren’t creeping in.

Spend time with family
If you’ve got kids or grandchildren, relish being together and share your stories, it’s never time wasted.

Reconnect with old friends
Reach out and share memories with old friends, you never know, they’ve probably been meaning to get in touch too.

Research your family tree
Genealogical hobbies are a great past time and you never know what you’ll unearth in your family tree. Sites like Ancestry.com are a good place to start.

Make new friends
New friendships can lead you to unexpected places and bring new perspectives. It’s harder to make friends as you get older.

Learn another language
Meet new people, stave off dementia and broaden your horizons. At the very least, impress your friends when you order off the menu in a genuine accent at that place you love.

Read a classic
Own countless classics that you’ve never read? Well now’s the time to crack one open and reap that sense of achievement.

Be grateful
Gratitude has proven psychological benefits and there’s so much to be thankful for in this beautiful part of the world. Try a gratitude journal or an app to keep you on track.

Wondering if you should retire in Kelowna? Instead of asking ‘if’, the question you should be asking is ‘when?’.

That’s a bold statement, I know but we’re confident that you’ll agree. After all, the Okanagan Valley is a tourist destination for good reason. With 2000 hours of sunshine every year, beaches and lakes, mountains, orchards, parks and rolling hills, not to mention the world-class amenities, this is a place of envy for people of all ages.

You’ve worked hard to get to this stage in your life and it’s important to live somewhere you can enjoy each day to the fullest. Who wouldn’t want to switch rainy rush hour traffic for a relaxing lakeside view and a glass of red? So, here are a few reasons to consider Kelowna for your years of R&R.

Active outdoor lifestyle

The four distinct seasons we experience in the Okanagan make it a playground for outdoor activities and sports all year round.

It’s not called Lake Country for nothing with its abundant pristine, clear waters. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to enjoying the lake life, whether it’s a gentle paddle or an adrenaline-filled day of water surfing, your time can be as tranquil or adventure-packed as you please.

The 50 km long Okanagan Rail Trail hugs the lakes from Kelowna, all the way to Vernon and is perfect for a scenic bike ride with beach stops along the way.

If you’re looking to perfect your swing, with 19 picturesque courses to choose from, you can enjoy one of the longest golf seasons in Canada giving you plenty of time to practice.

In the winter, SilverStar Mountain Resort offers world-renowned terrain for powder-hounds to indulge in their snowsports of choice.

The list goes on but it’s best to get out there and experience the amazing Okanagan outdoors for yourself.

Culture, leisure & entertainment

Living in Canada’s fruit basket definitely has its perks, such as the much loved by locals Farmers Market and a thriving culinary scene with top-tier wineries drawing in foodies from far and wide.

Our region is rich in tradition and character. The valley boasts an impressive 120 wineries consistently ranking among the world’s best at international competitions, 40 of those are right on our Kelowna doorstep.

The vibrant arts community offers free outdoor concerts all summer long with LIVE! in Lake Country and the annual Lake Country Art Walk is a great excuse to get the community together.

If retail therapy is your vice then the shopping won’t disappoint. With plentiful unique boutiques downtown and malls boasting bigger brand names, all tastes are catered to.

International travel on your doorstep

Whether you have plans to travel the world, have family visit from overseas or want to visit the grandkids in another province, the easily accessible Kelowna International Airport offers plenty of daily flights.

With the Okanagan Valley being such a beloved destination you’ll have family and friends vying to visit you. There’s no shortage of entertainment either in this family-oriented and kid-friendly locale.

Healthcare

Access to quality healthcare is important to everyone no matter their age. Knowing you’re near a world-class hospital takes a load off your mind.

Your health is a priority and in Kelowna, you’ll find the full spectrum of services you need to enable you to live your life to the fullest. Also, did I mention the 2000 hours of vitamin D and active lifestyle?

The verdict

We are so lucky to call this place home, with its ideal climate, the abundance of beauty and outdoor living and most importantly; the quality of people that make up our thriving community.

So, when are you moving to Kelowna? We can’t wait to welcome you.

I often hear people say that time has just run away with them. As things change and the years roll by, it can be easy to let our daily routines fall to the wayside. We may even get to the point where taking care of ourselves becomes less of a priority than it once was.

Well, I’m here to tell you that you are in-fact, worthy of self-care and making yourself a priority, no matter your age.

These six simple and easy to form habits are key to a healthy, happy life. Because that’s what you deserve.

Nourish your body

It should be no surprise that we kick off this list by talking about nutrition. As the old adage goes, ‘we are what we eat.’ I’m sure if we were to consider this when reaching for something greasy or crispy, maybe we’d think twice. Fresh, juicy, whole foods are where we should be aiming and homegrown produce gets you bonus points. Sounds better already, doesn’t it.

To put it simply, eating vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein helps keep your heart healthy and fuels your body so that you can get out there and enjoy yourself. Try to say ‘Yes’ to more of these beneficial foods and you’ll find that there’s naturally less need to reach for the foods that damage our health.

With Organic farming quite literally on your doorstep at Ariva, there will be plenty of fresh produce to indulge in.

Are you drinking enough water? Most adults live their lives perpetually dehydrated and that takes a huge toll on our health. If you struggle with your daily water intake, it might help to follow this basic rule; for every other type of beverage that you consume, drink a glass of water. If you do exercise, drink even more to replenish your body. Keep an eye on your intake and bear in mind that water is a natural anti-ageing treatment, so if you’re looking to help your skin, drink up.

Natural activity

Weight lifting and extreme sports aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. There’s good news for those of us that prefer something a bit more gentle.

Just 30 minutes of low-intensity activity can help preserve both our memory and mental function as we age. Walk as often as you can and make it a daily habit. Consistent exercise can help keep your heart healthy and the more spread out your exercise throughout the day, the better.

Using your muscles has so many benefits and you don’t have to go to a gym to do it. Increasing your strength can help deter chronic diseases and reduce depression as well as improving flexibility, increasing bone mass and lowering body fat. That sounds great for the next time you need to get up off the floor!

Taking the stairs, cleaning your condo, doing the food shop; all of these little daily steps help keep you fit and healthy. For something a bit more exciting, try canoeing or paddleboarding. A swim is a wonderful way to start the day off or even a stroll out in nature will get your heart pumping.

Get outside

Being outside in gardens, forests and near water is proven to be good for our overall health and wellbeing. Take some calming time for yourself outdoors and relax in the restorative presence of nature. Allow yourself to immerse fully with no distractions, just taking it all in. You’ll be left with reduced cortisol levels and a much better mood.

We are blessed with countless opportunities to be outdoors in the Okanagan, making it easy to enjoy time in the open air.

A change of scenery can do wonders to re-energize your senses. Some fresh air and a walk with friends combines exercise and social time, that’s a win-win.

Walking outdoors as opposed to the treadmill exposes us to vitamin D, air movement and varied terrain to work our muscles. People who live in areas of steeper terrain tend to live longer so don’t shy away from that hill.

Make connections

In later life, people often struggle with loneliness having relied on the same small group of people for company. Broadening our social circle brings many benefits and surrounding ourselves with happy people has a direct, positive effect on our life expectancy.

Let yourself have fun. Forming friendships and spending time with people that make you laugh will keep you feeling young. There’s a myriad of research demonstrating that laughter is key in reducing pain and improving the oxygen flow to your brain and heart.

Science shows that we build and maintain habits over just 66 days. In such a short time, with the support and involvement of your like-minded peers, in an environment designed to help you thrive, you’ll have the foundations set for a healthy, fulfilled retirement.

Exercise your mind

It’s the most valuable asset we have so it’s important to keep it healthy. Your brain needs exercise every day, just like your body and it doesn’t require anything complicated.

Learning new things is one of the best ways to keep your brain in tiptop condition. Pick up a new skill or try your hand at something different. Join a class or get involved in groups with friends. You’ll likely meet some new people along the way.

Getting to know other people and engaging in discussions will naturally keep your mind moving. Actively listen and pay attention to get the best out of your brain and your relationships. Reading, writing, playing games and instruments are also great ways to keep that mind sharp.

Environment

The key to success? Your environment. Living somewhere that’s specially designed to help you lead a healthy lifestyle, is the best way to set yourself up for success and cultivate those habits.

Living in a community that makes you happy, has plenty of green spaces, is safe and offers activities that you enjoy is important. If that’s not something you have at the moment, maybe it’s time to make the change. People are often surprised at the quality of life and the social scene they enjoy when they move to a condo living community.

A healthy, happy life.

If you keep these six habits in mind, hopefully, you’ll find yourself making good choices and saying yes to the things that keep you on the path to a healthy, fulfilling life.

And suddenly you know: It’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings. ― Meister Eckhart

“How do I fill my time during retirement?” This is a common questions people ask themselves as they’re approaching retirement. Days can be daunting if you don’t know how to spend your time. We’re going to go over a few activities that you can try and participate in to better enjoy your days spent in retirement.

Activities

Retirement is the time to do things that make you happy. So, the first thing you’ll have to do is some self-reflection. Reflecting on yourself, your likes and dislikes, your hobbies and really just what makes you truly happy. There is an endless number of activities that you can participate in and an endless amount of things to try. Whether you want to fill your days enjoying the small things, trying new things, making a difference in your community, or shooting for the stars, there’s definitely something you can do that will fill your time.

Grow a garden

Growing a garden is a great activity that you can enjoy each step of the way and reap the rewards of your efforts. There are some studies out there that even say gardening can help you live a longer, happier life.

Gardening is an activity that provides you with low-intensity physical exercise, and bonus because it gets you outdoors which is excellent for your health and mental state. Gardening can also help you establish a routine and will give you something to wake up for each day which is very important to have at any stage of life.

Write a book

When you’ve reached the age of retirement, it’s likely that you have had many experiences, gained lots of knowledge and thought up some unique ideas over the years. Why not put some of those into a book? It can be a great way to relive some of your memories, record your life events or just be creative.

The great thing about writing books is that there are no qualifications or education requirements necessary, anybody can write a book. Writing a book can be done in so many different ways, you could write a book just for yourself, and do nothing else with it but read it on your own. You could also write a book for your family members, a loved one, or for the whole world to read. The decision is yours and you can find it along the way as you simply sit and let your creativity flow.

Learn a new instrument

Have you always wanted to learn how to play the piano? Or the guitar? Those two instruments are the most common ones to learn and they are both excellent starting points for anyone who wants to learn some other instrument as well. Learning how to play a new instrument is a satisfying skill that will help to enrich your life and provide you with something to look forward to. Maybe you simply have a favourite song that you want to slowly work towards perfecting. Don’t forget that your voice is an instrument as well, and voice lessons can be a lot of fun.

Make new friends

As people age, it’s common for them to feel like they need to spend time alone, and alone time is great, you can definitely learn how to really enjoy spending time with yourself, and it is very important. However, it’s also important to spend time with friends, it often improves and enhances the lives of others and your own. Having a group of friends will help you stay connected to the world and can broaden your perspective on life and encourage you to try things you otherwise would not.

Learn how to use and appreciate new technology

There is so much happening in the world of technology right now, and it can be very overwhelming. As soon as you figure out how to do something, something new seems to come along. There are many ways you can learn how to use technology to your advantage, especially during these times of COVID where people are staying home now more than ever and are connecting with others via technology. Maybe during your retirement, you learn how to facetime, zoom or skype with other family members. Technology is fantastic for maintaining connections between people. You can schedule regular chats with the people in your lives without having to leave your home, which can be very convenient!

Become a teacher

Many people who become teachers often do so as a second career. Once you have reached the age of retirement, you have gained lots of knowledge that others would likely benefit from. Sharing your knowledge and teaching others is a fulfilling activity that many people find joy in. Maybe you become a teacher for what you were doing throughout your career, or perhaps you teach others your passion or hobbies. Becoming a teacher these days doesn’t mean you have to stand in front of a classroom of people and give a lecture, you can create online courses or even ‘How-To’ videos on YouTube or Facebook. You could also create a small club within your community where people get together to learn something or create something. Maybe you love crafts, and you want to share your knowledge of some DIY (Do It Yourself) projects that other people may be interested in doing. There are lots of different ways to share your knowledge with others and it’s a common activity among retirees.

Explore your community

Travelling is another common activity among retirees, many people relocate to warmer areas or travel around the world to see new places during their retirement. During these times of the COVID-19 pandemic, travelling has become increasingly difficult so many people have instead decided to explore their own corner of the world. It can be very interesting to see the places that you are surrounded by it can offer a higher sense of appreciation for your community and it allows you to see the different kinds of people that reside in your area.

Take-away point

The list of activities is endless. There is so much to see and do and learn and try during your retirement, the most difficult part may just be choosing which one to tackle first.

As you age it becomes increasingly important to incorporate regular physical activity into life for the overall health of your body and mind. There are endless benefits to physical activity which should be considered as you get older. Exercise helps to improve the overall quality of life and increases life expectancy, which is reason enough to mix it into your routine. Physical activity also aids in the prevention of disease and chronic conditions and –if completed on a consistent basis– can improve brain functionality. Each of these reasons, along with the countless other benefits to exercising should encourage the integration of movement and activity into your daily routine.

Improved quality of life and increased life expectancy

As we age, our muscle mass and strength begin to decline. Muscle strength and mobility are necessary for overall bone strength and balance. The gradual deterioration of our bodies leads to increased mobility issues and encourages people to become reliant on others to complete daily activities. To improve the quality of our lives and increase life expectancy exercise and general movement can be practiced on a regular schedule. The benefits of this can also work to reduce depression and anxiety and maintain independence.

Reduces depression and anxiety

Daily exercise and movement can help to improve both physical and mental well-being. Exercise has the ability to drastically improve mood and can alleviate symptoms of depression. The simple action of getting outside each morning has the power to change your entire day. Exercising can take your mind off the stresses of everyday life and releases endorphins that work to enhance your sense of well-being. It also helps to grow levels of self-confidence through meeting goals or taking on challenges related to physical activity.

Many people feel like they are required to dedicate multiple hours each day to exercise in order to improve their mental state and reduce negative emotions, however 10-15 minutes each day is enough to help you feel good about yourself. Its important to start small so as to not overwhelm yourself with the daunting task of exercise. Trying to take on more than you can handle is a common reason people give up on exercise. 15 minutes each day is easy to find and as you turn those 15 minutes into a routine, you’re body will crave more activity and you can begin to increase the duration of exercise you dedicate to your life.

Maintain independence

Daily movement also has the power to help individuals to maintain their independence. Independence in this case is the ability to perform regular daily activities without the help from others. Exercising on a regular basis helps to build muscle and maintain agility which allows people to continue participating in their day-to-day activities independently without relying on the strength of others. Preventing injuries from occurring is important for indiividuals seeking to maintain independence. Injuries can lead to the loss of regular functionality on a daily basis and its important to exercise to gain balance to prevent injuries from occurring. Falling is among the top injuries that occur to seniors and has the potential to lead to broken bones which significantly reduces functionality, movement and quality of life. Exercise and building strength have the ability to prevent or decrease the chance of a fall. Exercise also improves balance and stability, reducing the likelihood of falling and losing independence.

Living an inactive life can cause mobility issues, increase muscle loss and joint pain and increase the risk of injury. As individuals become less independent with day-to-day activities, their quality of life begins to decline.

Prevention of disease or chronic conditions

Regular, consistent movement has the ability to prevent or delay the risk of certain diseases such as diabetes, heart diseases and strokes to name a few.

Exercising increases the circulation and blood flow in your body and allows oxygen levels to rise which helps to keep blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels low reducing the risk of heart disease and nerve damage. Regular physical activity can also help to reduce pain of asthma, back pain, arthritis and many other illnesses and diseases. For example a consistent activity can reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks, improve muscle functionality for affected joints while reducing stiffness.

Lack of physical activity is one of the four main risk factors that lead to chronic diseases. Exercising can also delay the progression of chronic diseases for those that currently have them.

Improved brain functionality

Exercising does not only improve your physical abilities and strength; it also helps improve your brain and mental functionality. We’re not just talking about brain puzzles and cognitive exercises (which are also very important); we’re talking about real physical exercise here.

As you’re exercising, your heart rate increases which in turn increases your blood flow and exposes your brain to a greater volume of oxygen and nutrients. Simply ensuring your brain is getting more oxygen is enough to help your brain’s functionality in some way or another and is another reason to incorporate an exercise routine into your daily life.

How to exercise

If exercise is not already a component to your daily routine, that is okay! You don’t need to be intimidated by elaborate routines, heavy equipment or comprehensive training programs. The important thing here is that you incorporate a little movement into your daily life. There are no rules here, but consistency is key. In order to get the benefits of physical activity, regular consistent movement is needed. This can be as simple as walking to get your mail every day, participating in online yoga class, going for a swim in the lake or playing with grandkids.

It is never too late to start engaging in and participating in a regular and consistent exercise routine. Developing daily movement as a habit has the potential to transform lives and greatly increase quality of life for many individuals.

Learning to laugh at yourself is an important skill to attain. Laughing at yourself sets you on an important path to inner peace and self-confidence. If you are able to truly laugh at yourself and the mistakes you make, you’re well on your way to self-acceptance which is important for achieving a fulfilled life. If you’re not able to accept who you are and where you are, you’ll never be satisfied with yourself and will never feel the fulfillment that you deserve. Life doesn’t need to be so serious, learn to laugh a little, even at yourself.

Appreciate the little things

Focusing and appreciating the smaller things in life brings your attention to what sustains you and allows you to live in this life. Being grateful, practicing gratitude and not taking thigs for granted allow you to feel fulfilled, happy and at peace with life. You’ll learn to realize that life isn’t always about you. There are so many other things going on around you that you forget about with the stresses of everyday life. These little things allow you to be where you are and have got you this far. Taking time to appreciate and be thankful for the little things allow you to be happier with how far you’ve come and how far you’ll go.

Find your passion

Participating in what you love and what you are passionate about may be the single biggest step to feeling fulfilled. Partaking in your passion gives you the desire, drive and reason to build new experiences and even relationships and bonds with other people. You’ll never regret revolving your life around what you love, even if you don’t start doing it until you’re retired! It’s never too late to find your passion. If you haven’t found your passion yet, that’s okay! Searching the depths of your mind and your past won’t always help you find it, you’ll easily get caught up in the search. Passion stems from experiences, not contemplation. So if you’re feeling stuck, create positive experiences and simply live your life, you’ll find it along the way.

Take risks

Taking risks in your life, no matter the outcome, allows you to grow and gain confidence, experience and resilience. These are all important to building a fulfilled life. Risks lead to enormous inner growth and admit the ability to look back and reflect and feel proud of the risks you took. Risks give you the opportunity to be more open and accepting of new things, it opens up so many doors in your life and provides opportunities for new experiences. Through risk taking, you learn to be content with your decisions, because often, you can’t take your actions back and simply have to move forward. So you might as well learn to be optimistic about what paths risks can lead you in your future. As people near the later years in their life, they often regret not taking risks, so in order to avoid regret and replace that with fulfillment, learn to take some risks.

Share your knowledge and wisdom

This is another big step you can take to feel fulfilled. Many people feel that the experiences they have throughout their lives gives them permission to have all the knowledge they have acquired and therefore don’t want to share it because they put in the work to get it. Although this is a true statement, sharing your knowledge and wisdom leads you to fulfillment. It gives you, and those you share it with, joy and opportunity. Maybe those you share your knowledge with take action and create something special, maybe it just makes someone smile. Whatever the outcome of sharing your wisdom and knowledge have, it’s better than keeping it all for yourself.

Take time to reinvent yourself

It’s extremely common for people to feel as though their careers make them who they are. When someone asks you to tell them about yourself, it’s likely that you would start by stating what you do or did for a living. Ex: “I’m a retired lawyer, I’ve practiced law for over 25 years”. Your career doesn’t have to define you, and it’s common for retirees to feel lost without their career because they don’t seem to know who they are anymore. So take some time to reinvent yourself, learn to describe yourself without the work you’ve done and focus instead on who you really are and what make you, you! This will help you feel fulfilled rather than lost and will encourage you to continue improving yourself.

Set goals

Setting goals are very important, once you are retired this is still relevant just in a different point of view. Setting goals allow you to live a fulfilled life in the sense that you are continually working towards an objective. If you focus these goals on self-improvement, you can feel fulfilled as you attain each of the goals you set out to achieve. This allows you to continually be successful as you lead a richer life, gaining knowledge, wisdom and experiences.

Take-away point

There are a number of things you can work on to acquire a fulfilled retirement life. Fulfillment is created through positive experiences. Following the above tasks can allow you to form healthy habits leading to a joyous, fulfilled retirement life that you can non-regretfully look back on as you continue to grow.
